In the early part of the 19th century a gentleman named Ruben Boswell moved to what would later be Weddington and donated 4 acres of land for the purpose of building an Episcopal Church. 22 farmers also donated more than $260 to build the church. These communal efforts bore much more than a house of worship they also helped to serve as a unifying agent to the community The area surrounding the church soon morphed into the town of Weddington.

The town was named for Boswell’s daughter who married a man named Weddington. The town prospered because of the cotton industry, but took an economic hit when markets for the cotton began to diminish. The construction of the railroad in 1874, gave the area a better outlook as it attracted more commerce into the area.
